DOCKING FOR DUMMIES

“Honey, honey, get the fenders ready. Port side, PORT, that’s LEFT, no, MY left! Jesus, this slip’s tight. When did this wind kick up? And where did this current come from? Oh, forget it. I can’t back in with this wind. Other side, honey, OTHER SIDE. I SAID I’m not backing in. Can you not see which side we’re about to hit? I’m NOT yelling. I’m docking. And you’re not helping. As if you could do any better. Unlike your car, this boat doesn’t park itself. Let’s see YOU park something you can’t stop or steer. They’re too low....

IN PICTURES: KEY WEST CELEBRATES HEMINGWAY WITH HISTORY & HUMOR

Fans of Ernest Hemingway’s literary greatness and vigorous life, including scores of bearded Hemingway look-alikes, converged on Key West July 20 to 25 for Hemingway Days 2021.  The annual celebration salutes the Nobel Prize-winning author’s writing achievements, sporting pursuits and enjoyment of the island’s lifestyle.  The festival’s highlight is the Hemingway Look-Alike Contest at Sloppy Joe’s Bar, 201 Duval St., which raises money for scholarships. Past winners of the Hemingway Look-Alike Contest, including Chris Storm, right, judge this year’s contestants during the first of two preliminary...

COMEDIAN PAULA POUNDSTONE RETURNS TO KEY WEST THEATER AUG. 21

As soon as comedian Paula Poundstone picks up the call, there’s a crackling energy on the other end of the line. She imparts a hearty, genuine greeting before launching into a conversation about masks that quickly leads her to wonder if it might be kind for society to start an “Awkward Chin Support Group” now that we’re all feeling so exposed. It’s easy to see how this woman has been charming her fans and relating to live audiences for 40 years. (I also begin to wonder if I should be self-conscious about my chin.) Poundstone’s upcoming Aug. 21 comedy show at Key West Theater couldn’t arrive...

KEY WEST TREASURE DIVERS STRIKE GOLD — AND SILVER — ON FAMOUS SHIPWRECK

Silver tarnishes and darkens, but gold shines on — even after 400 years submerged in saltwater.  That was the case on July 16, when the Nuestra Senora de Atocha, one of the world’s most famous and valuable shipwrecks, gave up some of its golden cargo for the first time in 20 years. Four hundred years on the ocean floor did nothing to dull the glint of a gold coin from the 1622 wreck of the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha. MANDY MILES/Keys Weekly Mel Fisher’s Treasures diver Zach Moore was working with an underwater metal detector, scouring the current search site with other experienced...

THE COLLEGE OF THE FLORIDA KEYS INTRODUCES NEW MASCOT, SHEL THE TUGA

There is a new face — and flippers — on the campus of The College of the Florida Keys: Shel the Tuga. The college’s new mascot, the Tugas, is an abbreviation of “tortugas,” the Spanish word for turtle. The fictional sea turtle mascot sports CFK’s colors: an ocean blue body with lightning bolts and a sunset-orange shell. The college’s marketing team worked with local graphic designer Seth Mularz to create the design.  The introduction of the Tuga comes as athletics return to campus after a 45-year hiatus. Women’s and men’s swim teams made their competition debut earlier this semester at both...

KEY WEST SANDWICH MASTER IS ON A ROLL — HE’LL ‘MEAT’ YA AT THE MOOSE LODGE

Micah Woerner is on a roll — as a Key West sandwich master. He got locals hooked last year on his Little Whitehouse Subs, with the essential South Jersey sub rolls, sky-high sliced meats, fresh toppings and clever names. (Not to mention his partner, Joy Terwilliger’s daily cupcake selections.) Woerner now has expanded his empire to include one of his own hometown favorites from his native Baltimore  — two-handed pit beef sandwiches. (There’s also pit turkey and pit ham.) Shannon Christle grills up sliced barbecued pit beef and melted cheddar cheese. You’ll need both hands — and plenty...
