SURVEY RESULTS: WE WANT A TARGET IN THE KEYS

Last month, the Keys learned that the Kmart stores in Marathon and Key Largo will be closing. Immediately, locals began imagining (or wishing for) its successor. The Keys Weekly conducted its own poll for a definitive answer — not just in the “Big Box” category, but other national offerings such as fast food and grocery store chains. (This list takes into consideration that we are already well-served by Publix, Winn-Dixie, The Home Depot, Walgreens, CVS, etc.) The results were very clear in every category except for dine-in restaurant options. About 350 residents took our quiz. See the results...

MARATHON COUNCIL TO CONSIDER TAXING DISTRICT, WATERING LAWS

At its next meeting, the Marathon City Council will consider two important topics: the continuation or cancellation of the hospital special taxing district, and the city’s watering laws.  The Middle Keys Health Care Municipal Services Taxing Unit issue is a holdover from the March meeting of the council. At that meeting, lacking detailed financial accounting from Baptist Health South Florida regarding its expenditures on care for uninsured and underinsured patients in the Middle Keys, the council agreed to bring back two resolutions in April — one approving the continuation of the tax and one...

Opinion: affordable housing is under attack in Florida

This is your wake-up call, Florida, and we need your help to save affordable housing. Last week, Senate President Wilton Simpson and Speaker of the House Chris Sprowls unveiled legislation, HB 5401 and SPB 2512, to permanently redirect two-thirds of the housing trust funds each year to sea level rise and wastewater infrastructure projects.  That’s some serious money that won’t be available to teachers, firefighters, nurses and other first responders for housing assistance. If this legislation passes, 66% of the $423 million available in the housing trust funds will go toward priorities other...

MARATHON COMMUNITY — YOUNG AND OLD — REDESIGNING ROTARY PARK

Rotary Park in Marathon is turning 20 next year, just in time for a major upgrade and facelift. The city has $225,000 set aside in next year’s budget. As with the initial build, it will truly be a community effort, starting with design ideas contributed by students from Stanley Switlik Elementary.  “The experience of having local elementary school students draw out their ideas for the Play by Design consultants has proven to be a huge success,” said Shannon Wiley, the school’s art teacher.  Colton Huff’s sketch includes castle design elements and a zip line. As in 2002, the City of Marathon...

PAM HOBBS’ TROPICAL PAINTINGS ARE AS BRIGHT AS SHE IS

Key West artist Pam Hobbs’ work is as colorful and fun as her bubbly personality. Imagine the most whimsical of poems by Shel Silverstein mixed into an illustrative world from the mind of Dr. Seuss himself. Now add a splash of the most vibrant colors and patterns you can imagine with the chroma (vivid) oil paints.  Personally, I cannot even talk to Hobbs without smiling and I can’t look at a single one of her paintings without this same level of joy. I find myself wanting to jump inside one of her paintings for a little nap on the beach or perhaps just for a tropical mixed drink.  Hobbs is a...
