LOBSTER MINI-SEASON: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

WHEN & WHERE One of the most challenging parts of lobster mini-season is understanding its boundaries — both geographically and time-wise. There’s a difference between lobster hunting in Layton (never!) and in Key Colony Beach. As a general rule, don’t hunt for lobsters in canals … unless you are doing so in front of personal property, but only as far as the centerline of the canal. Also, don’t hunt for lobsters along shoreline, unless you are more than 100 feet away in open water. Keep reading:  During the July two-day sport season, and regular lobster season (Aug. 6 –...

#SOSCUBA FLOTILLA STOPS IN KEY WEST, THEN HEADS FOR CUBAN COAST

Bearing #SOSCUBA signs and flying Cuban and American flags, a flotilla of seven boats from Miami stopped for fuel in Key West Friday afternoon, then departed for international waters offshore of Havana, Cuba. The effort was said to be planned to “safely show support for the Cuban people.” Boats from Miami bearing #SOSCUBA signs refuel Friday at Key West’s Conch Harbor Marina before departing for international waters offshore of Havana, Cuba to show support for the Cuban people. ‘LOBSTER’ LEE STARLING/Contributed Although the U.S. Coast Guard did not sanction the event, officers were closely...

BRIAN KELLY OF FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE RECORDS 1ST SOLO ALBUM IN KEY WEST

A half became whole this summer. Country music superstar Brian “BK” Kelley, “the Florida half” of top-selling country duo Florida Georgia Line, released his first solo album, “Sunshine State of Mind,” in which he vows to be a “Florida boy forever.” Three or four of the songs were recorded in Key West at Jimmy Buffett’s Shrimp Boat Sound studio along Key West Harbor.  Kelley and friends had a big time while “working” in Key West: fishing, writing songs, drinking, recording songs, fishing, drinking. And there are plenty of recognizable Keys references in the songs, including Hemingway, Key...

BREAKING NEWS: KEY WEST OFFICIALS CALL COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ‘BULLIES’ DURING BUDGET TALKS ABOUT ASSISTED-LIVING FACILITY

Key West officials had harsh words for their Monroe County counterparts during the city’s budget workshop Thursday, when talk turned to a potential new partnership in Poinciana Gardens assisted-living facility. Monroe County plans to close the 16-bed Bayshore Manor senior living facility on Stock Island and move the 11 current residents to Poinciana Gardens on Duck Avenue in Key West. That closure will save the county $1.2 million per year and will free up the Bayshore property for other county uses. The Key West Housing Authority no longer can afford to operate Poinciana Gardens and has asked...

Yes, you’re reading this right, and no, you don’t have to rub your eyes: construction at Rowell’s Waterfront Park is beginning in the next month, according to Kevin Wilson, assistant administrator for Monroe County. Wilson is the supervisor of planning and execution for all county capital construction. “We’re happy to be getting started and keep adding value to the community,” Wilson told Keys Weekly. He detailed the first phase of the construction that will take place within a few weeks in Key Largo’s eight-acre park at MM104.5, bayside: restrooms at the southwestern corner, a walking...

KEY WEST TREASURE DIVERS STRIKE GOLD — AND SILVER — ON FAMOUS SHIPWRECK

Silver tarnishes and darkens, but gold shines on — even after 400 years submerged in saltwater.  That was the case on July 16, when the Nuestra Senora de Atocha, one of the world’s most famous and valuable shipwrecks, gave up some of its golden cargo for the first time in 20 years. Four hundred years on the ocean floor did nothing to dull the glint of a gold coin from the 1622 wreck of the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha. MANDY MILES/Keys Weekly Mel Fisher’s Treasures diver Zach Moore was working with an underwater metal detector, scouring the current search site with other experienced...

HISTORICAL DIG: RESEARCH ARCHEOLOGISTS DIG INTO 1800S LIFE IN KEY WEST

Digging a 2-foot hole in one’s backyard usually wouldn’t warrant a team of student archaeologists from the University of Miami. But then, most backyards don’t date back to 1829 — and they don’t conceal centuries-old dishes, tools, cooking instruments and other common household items that provide a glimpse into Key West’s past and the lives of those who called it home. Key West’s Oldest House, 322 Duval St., built in 1829, is now a museum and headquarters of the Old Island Restoration Foundation, which operates the house for the state of Florida, which owns the historical resource. University...

KEY WEST WANTS CRUISE SHIPS OUT – OFFICIALS DISCUSS NEXT STEPS & POTENTIAL LAWSUITS

Key West wants out of its 27-year marriage to cruise ships and to the privately owned Pier B dock. That much was clear from the July 12 city commission workshop.  No votes were taken as the meeting was a workshop.  “Can we please give the cruise ships direction that they’re not welcome, at least at our two ports?” Commissioner Jimmy Weekley asked City Manager Patti McLauchlin. McLauchlin also said, in answer to a question from Commissioner Billy Wardlow, that no smaller cruise ships have yet expressed any interest in coming to Key West. It seems the city still has a way to refuse...
