BIZ FEATURE: BONGOS DEFINES ISLAND VIBE IN THE KEYS

Picture this: a shady oasis of palm trees and tropical natives sheltering a grass-and-coral slab dining area interspersed with mismatched tables, swing chairs and little shade structures. Dead ahead is a bar backed with 20 taps (mostly craft beer, but also some wine and other fun stuff) on a colorful mural wall. At a right angle is the kitchen and a little stage with a sand dance floor. This is Bongos at The Lagoon on Grassy Key. The restaurant and bar “nails” island vibe in a way that’s unmatched in the Florida Keys. “I love Bongos and I love all the good things I’ve heard from the community,”...

DOCK UP AND DINE AT THESE KEYS JOINTS – ONBOARD MAGAZINE

The Florida Keys have something many seaside communities don’t: dockside dining. Guests arrive by boat with no worries about where to park the rental car (although most places are also accessible by land).  It’s a great way to end the day on the water that somehow makes the appetite sharper. Here are our picks: SUNSET GRILLE & WATER BAR, Marathon This place is the rest stop in the Middle Keys largest vehicular and marine thoroughfare. Located at the base of the 7 Mile Bridge on Knights Key, the huge restaurant and bar also features a pool. Sunday Funday is an established tradition as are...

BIG MOUTH EATERY’S SANDWICHES ARE SO REBELLIOUS–AND HEAD-BANGINGLY GOOD–THEY’RE PUNK ROCK

Perhaps it’s the Mick Jagger-huge lips on Big Mouth Eatery’s logo outside that calls to mind rock ’n’ roll first. And when you walk inside the colorful restaurant, you also see graffiti-like art with skulls — rockers love skulls, right? Then you see the craft-sandwich-themed menu.  The choices include a category called “Classic Cuts,” with your typical comfort foods like grilled cheese and BLTs. There’s also a section that’s a little more rebellious and risk-taking — improvisational combos called “Lab Creations.” The “Big Bologna” would make Elvis proud: giant thick-sliced bologna,...

KEY WEST SANDWICH MASTER IS ON A ROLL — HE’LL ‘MEAT’ YA AT THE MOOSE LODGE

Micah Woerner is on a roll — as a Key West sandwich master. He got locals hooked last year on his Little Whitehouse Subs, with the essential South Jersey sub rolls, sky-high sliced meats, fresh toppings and clever names. (Not to mention his partner, Joy Terwilliger’s daily cupcake selections.) Woerner now has expanded his empire to include one of his own hometown favorites from his native Baltimore  — two-handed pit beef sandwiches. (There’s also pit turkey and pit ham.) Shannon Christle grills up sliced barbecued pit beef and melted cheddar cheese. You’ll need both hands — and plenty...
