A community grieved on the morning of Sept. 6, as news spread of Mike Forster’s passing following a battle with COVID-19. On Facebook, a flood of posts brought words of sadness over the loss of someone who embodied what it meant to be an active member within the community. Many also relayed thoughts of praise and thanks for Forster, 61, who constantly paid it forward and gave back. KEY WEST CONDO GETS REPRIEVE — FOR NOW

A Key West condominium building received a temporary reprieve Monday morning. Raj Ramsingh, the city’s chief building official, did not condemn Santa Clara Condominiums, 3312 Northside Dr., during a 10 a.m. hearing at city hall. “I will not condemn the building, but this is still not off the table,” Ramsingh told the condo association board, unit owners and some of their tenants who were present. “I don’t want these necessary repairs to fall by the wayside as has occurred in the past,” Ramsingh said after hearing testimony from two engineers and condo association board president Oliver Kofoid. INAUGURAL MARINE DEBRIS CLEANUP COMPETITION SET

Collect debris on land or sea and vie for more than $5,000 in cash prizes. An inaugural marine debris tournament in Islamorada is seeking teams eager to fill as many garbage bags as possible. Set for Sept. 18, also known as International Coastal Cleanup Day, participants can compete in one of three divisions. A land division will see teams grabbing garbage from the shoreline up to 100 feet inland. CANAL RESTORATION COSTS LIKELY TO EXCEED $300 MILLION

A long-term plan to improve water quality and reduce sediment buildup in 63 village canals could cost well over $300 million.  That’s according to a recent report that ranks each canal based on restoration needs and identifies technologies recommended to improve water quality.  Backfill and culvert work for a little more than 10 canals within the Port Antigua community on Lower Matecumbe Key, has an estimated cost of $41 million. The Matecumbe Historical Trust will hold its annual Labor Day service in memory of the civilians and war veterans who lost their lives in the Hurricane of Sept. 2, 1935.
