BARGES BYPASS BRIDGES: BUSINESS FINDS A WAY ON DUCK KEY
There’s a popular meme (internet joke) with a man holding up a finger to his forehead, a knowing Mona Lisa smile on his face. It reads, “Modern problems require modern solutions.”
That’s exactly what’s happening on Duck Key, just north of Marathon. In October 2020, the bridges were closed to heavy traffic (work trucks, garbage trucks, etc.) by emergency order. Currently bridge traffic is limited to four tons (Harbour Drive and Seaview bridges) or 10 tons (Bimini Drive Bridge) due to fears for their structural integrity.
