SETTING GOALS: HOW TO STAY ON TRACK

It’s time for a bit of a mid-year check. It’s mid-year. Can you believe it?

A lot is going on, too many things to list. And then you end up reading about “revenge vacation” in a Forbes article. Not a big shocker, I guess, seeing the amount of traffic here in the Keys.

But let’s take a moment to reflect: are you at the place you desire to be in your life? Sit with that for a minute. Well, it may take longer, so give yourself grace.

I feel good about where I am at mid-year. But I would be lying if I didn’t say it took work to get here. Now I am at a place of editing and letting things go. And that took work too.

Here are some examples of letting things go:

  • Email lists I am on that don’t serve me — unsubscribe.
  • Clubhouse rooms or Zoom calls where I am just sitting there — quietly leave.
  • People in my feed who post negative things all the time — don’t like or comment and your feed will shift.
  • Paid platforms that aren’t helpful — don’t renew.

Can you add some of your examples?

I had this happen last Saturday with a Clubhouse room. If you don’t know what Clubhouse is, it’s one of the latest social media platforms, and it’s audio only. You can join rooms based on various topics, come and go, as well as follow people. It started with Apple products last year but recently added Android. It’s been growing very fast. There are some excellent aspects to it, but also some time-wasting parts. In this example, a time-wasting aspect but good hindsight, shift and lesson.

Here’s the story: Someone I was following on Instagram posted about a room she was hosting that day. The room title intrigued me and is something I am reading books on — eastern and western spiritual practices. So, I jumped into the room to find that nothing being shared was new to me or in line with the room topic to my expectations. So, after half an hour, I used the “leave quietly” function and went back to working on my business.

“Make at least one definite move daily towards your goal.”
—Bruce Lee.

Whew! I was relieved and grateful for the action I chose. I took a moment to be aware of how I was spending my time, shifted, left the scenario and chose a path that best suited my goals. This wasn’t the first time this happened, so I made some changes to who I was following and a mental note to not to make the same mistake again.

“Success is easy to achieve once you set your mind on a specific goal.”—Aristotle.

It feels good to cleanse some accounts and start anew with accounts that may help me move forward or learn something new. Finding new people to collaborate with, some new organizations to join and more free time to quiet my brain and let creative juices flow.

Social media can work to our advantage and what we desire, or it can be a waste. Either way, it’s a choice, and it’s essential to think about it in conjunction with your goals.

I heard a speaker recently say that only 3% of people establish goals. And out of that percentage, how many do the work necessary to achieve them? And then some people wonder why there is the “1%.”

What actions are you taking today to get to that next level?
