MarineLab crew cleans Dagny Park mangrove island
Staff from MarineLab in Key Largo grabbed trash bags and headed out for a cleanup of a mangrove island in Dagny Johnson State Park on March 30.
This site is an important part of a state restoration project to clean debris caused by Hurricane Irma in 2017. The group focused on removing plastic debris, which is often laced with chemicals and is frequently eaten by animals.
After a sweaty morning, the staff reported about 245 pounds of trash collected from the environment. MarineLab, located at 51 Shoreland Dr., uses education and adventure in the Keys ecosystem to foster environmental awareness and stewardship on a local, regional and global scale.
