STICKING UP FOR KEY WEST YOUTH LACROSSE

Lacrosse continues to grow in popularity among boys and girls in the island city. The Key West Youth Lacrosse League just wrapped up its spring season, and despite the challenges of a pandemic, managed to keep 150 kids on the field and engaged. The league welcomes boys and girls, ages 4 to 15, with the littlest players known as the “mini sticks,” said Anna Louchheim who, with her husband, Chris, coaches teams, sits on the board of the league and are parents of players. SCENES FROM THE 7-MILE BRIDGE RUN

Despite the heat, it was a “fast” race on April 17 for the 40th annual 7 Mile Bridge Run. Collin Wainwright of Pennsylvania, 25, finished first with a time of 37:46. Marathon’s Jonathan and Owen Pitchford, 18-year-old twin brothers, were right behind finishing in 38:03 and 40:17. Jonathan won the race in 2019 with a time of 39 minutes even. MARATHON’S MATHIAS TRUJILLO SIGNS COLLEGE SOCCER OFFER

Marathon High School’s Mathias Trujillo will play soccer next year at Keystone College in Pennsylvania. The senior signed an offer April 20, surrounded by his coaches Jim Murphy, left, Kelly Cruz, and MHS’s athletic director, Lance Martin, and principal, Wendy McPherson. Hurricanes softball regular season draws to a close

The Coral Shores girls softball team took to the diamond for the final regular season game against Ferguson High School on April 16. Ferguson’s bats powered the team to victory, 18-4. All runs from the ’Canes offense came in the fourth inning. The softball team finished the regular season with a record of 6-7. MHS Tennis heads to districts

On April 12-13, the girls and boys tennis players from MHS went on a quick overnight trip to Miami where they played in their district matches at the Crandon Park Tennis Center.  The girls competed early Monday morning against five other teams from the district. The girls didn’t come home with any wins, but collectively agreed that they had played some of their best matches against the hardest opponents.  “Lilian (Guo) has possibly played one of the best matches of her season,” said Coach Richard Lorenzo of the team’s top ranked girl player. ‘Canes baseball pick up win, loss in recent games

Coming off a 7-0 win at Pinecrest Prep on April 6, the Coral Shores varsity baseball team returned home to face an offensive power in the South Dade Buccaneers on April 9. The Bucs’ bats put up 20 runs to the ’Canes 5 at Founders Park. Freshman catcher Steel Mientkiewicz went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in three runs. Sophomore Dylan Bloom and junior Kevin Mendoza each drove in an RBI.
