GOOD TIMES! MARATHON HS FOOTBALL TEAM CELEBRATE FIRST WIN

By Clare Merryman The Marathon High School Varsity Fins got their first win of the season, against Pompano Beach, on Sept 3 by a score of 10-9.  Patrick Crews had a 4th quarter 29-yard field goal that put the team ahead for good.  “Overall, our team played extremely tough and gritty. We battled until the very end and came away with a huge victory,” said head coach Mac Childress. The post GOOD TIMES! SPORTS & MORE: KWHS athletic director also hopes to coach soccer

Justin Martin was born and grew up in Key West, graduated from Key West High, then Flagler College in St. Augustine.  After college, he spent three  years tending to the family  business — commercial  fishing  — before he took on coaching  the Conchs’ girls soccer team. Now, since June, and at the age  of 27, he has become the  school’s athletic director, succeeding Sarah Eckert, who  has become the Key West volleyball coach. Several balls had to fall in the  right place for Martin to become AD: Kim Butler decided she didn’t want to continue as head coach of the school’s volleyball team. Eckert,...

STEADY BATS: UPPER KEYS BASEBALL PROGRAM AIMS TO IMPROVE SKILLS

Another school athletics year is underway in the Florida Keys. Fall athletes are taking to the fields and courts for practice in anticipation for the season’s beginning.  Baseball is still months away, but a new program in the Upper Keys is setting out to develop player skills and team success during the offseason. It’s also aiming to create a baseball experience unlike any other for players and their families in the Keys. Last baseball season saw a young Coral Shores team with new coaches in Joe Molinaro, Doug Mientkiewicz and Paul Vargo. With the season’s end came the realization that...

SPORTS & MORE: FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS READY FOR CONCHS

Football returns to Key West High School on Friday night, Aug. 20, when Monsignor Pace arrives. The 7 p.m. pre-season game will be played at the school’s new Backyard as will all Conch football and soccer games for the next two years as Tommy Roberts Memorial Stadium gets refurbished to the tune of $15 million. The team practiced and played at TRMS last year before practicing at the Backyard before that. Coach John Hughes now has scheduled five home games, including the pre-season game, to go along with five away games. Hughes began at Key West in 2003 as offensive line coach and after a two-year...

SPORTS & MORE: HOW MUCH MONEY IS ENOUGH?

My favorite soccer team is Barcelona (or Barça, as it’s commonly known).  And it’s all because of Lionel Messi. But now, Messi, perhaps the greatest soccer player of all time, is moving to Paris Saint-Germain. He says he regrets going to a rival team. I and big-time Barça fans regret it, too. There was a time when I thought I needed to know more about soccer -— European soccer, or football to be exact. At the same time, I was reading an article on Messi and became a fan. Since then, I have followed both Messi and Barcelona. And European football. I mention this because I assume many of you are...

Former NFL player Malcolm Mitchell gives pep talk in the Florida Keys

“Be the coffee beans.” It was an odd but effective message to come from a former New England Patriots wide receiver. But then again, Malcolm Mitchell’s career trajectory has also been odd, but extremely effective. Mitchell spoke Monday at a back-to-school rally for Monroe County School District teachers, staff and members of the high school football teams. He was at Key West High School early Monday morning and at Coral Shores in the afternoon. Retired New England Patriots wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell wore his Super Bowl ring while speaking at Key West and Coral Shores high schools on Aug....

SPORTS & MENTAL HEALTH: FIRST KHALIL, NOW SIMONE

By Ralph Morrow With anxiety, mental anguish and stress being the bywords for the Tokyo Olympics, and particularly Simone Biles, I was curious how far down the age levels the malady went. So I talked to the coach who has had unbridled Key West success: Ralph Henriquez Jr. In the mid-1990s, his Key West High School baseball teams won 44 straight games over two seasons and were ranked No. 1 in the country. Any problems with stress among his prep players? “Absolutely not,” said the coach, although he admits, “It’s a different world today. But back when we were winning those games and were No....

KEY WEST HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: NEW HOME FOR THE HOME TEAM

For the first time in recent memory, the Key West High School Conchs will play their home football games someplace other than Tommy Roberts Memorial Stadium. The stadium on Kennedy Drive is slated for a complete $15 million upgrade in the next two years. In the meantime, the fields at Tommy Roberts remain open and will be used for baseball and other activities, but the bleachers have long needed significant improvements or replacement and cannot be used for spectators. One source with close ties to the high school told the Keys Weekly “the bleachers are condemned. That’s why graduation was held...
