LONGTIME MONROE COUNTY JUDGE REFLECTS ON HER LEGACY

Judge Ruth Becker was elected to the Monroe County Court in 1990, then was re-elected without opposition until she retired on July 30. The Board of County commissioners saw fit to proclaim Aug. 18, 2021 Judge Ruth Becker Day. “The entire time, Her Honor was one of the best. I had nothing but the greatest of things to say about her,” said her longtime colleague, Marathon criminal defense attorney Bill Heffernan. “When I said goodbye, I’d been a lawyer for 50 years in January. I’ve been doing this for many years, in front of many judges. I can only tell you, Judge Becker was top shelf,...

STUDENTS EXPLORE THE DEPTHS & BAY IN NEW FIU PROGRAMS

Inside Monroe County classrooms, students will take their learning beneath the depths as they explore the world’s only underwater research and education laboratory. HOW MANY COVID-19-RELATED DEATHS IN MONROE COUNTY?

Deaths related to COVID-19 infections stood at 63 in Monroe County on Aug. 31. Of those deaths, two were among individuals who were vaccinated, per the county’s top health official.  Bob Eadie said the Keys have seen an uptick in deaths since a spike in COVID-19 cases shortly after the Fourth of July. Of the total deaths, the majority, if not all, had underlying health conditions.  “The thing to remember is those conditions were managed well, and they wouldn’t have died on that day were it not for the COVID infection,” he said. “I don’t want to minimize the fact that COVID is...

HYPERBARIC MEDICINE: MARINERS HOSPITAL IS BREAKING THE MOLD

Hyperbaric Chamber. Just the name sounds intimidating. “Chamber” sounds like a prison, and “baric” sounds too much like “barbaric” or … ew … barium, that icky solution you have to drink before a CT Scan. And most of the time, hyperbaric chambers even look like … a coffin. “Those are ‘monoplace chambers,’” said Scott Fowler, manager of Hyperbaric Medicine at Mariners. “Those are the most common hyperbaric chambers, and they look like clear coffins.” Mariners Hospital in Tavernier has made a special effort to make its hyperbaric chamber experience more comfortable. First of all, the chamber is...

MASK OPT-OUT GRANTED – SCHOOL BOARD REJECTS HEALTH DEPARTMENT ADVICE

On Aug. 24, after an almost four-hour school board meeting during which citizens passionately spoke both for and against the district’s current mask mandate — and after the county’s health department administrator abruptly announced that he no longer supports a parental opt-out — the board members unanimously voted to support its current policy: teachers, staff and children must wear masks, but parents can still sign a form to opt out. The vote is contrary to the stance of other South Florida school districts. Miami-Dade County has a mask mandate with no opt-out at all while Broward County...
