KEY WEST STUDENT CHOSEN AS 1 OF 50 ‘FREEDOM WRITERS’ WORLDWIDE

When their struggles became stories, young writers became warriors. Remember the 2007 movie, “Freedom Writers,” with Hilary Swank as California teacher Erin Gruwell, who transformed a class of students that others had deemed “unteachable?”  The movie’s true story about Gruwell’s high school initiative that turned at-risk students into authors has grown exponentially into a global curriculum that trains teachers to transform students by introducing them to relevant reading material and the emotional release of writing. Claire Schoonover, a Key West High School sophomore, was recently chosen...

WHAT BRINGS FABIEN COUSTEAU TO THE FLORIDA KEYS? THE OCEAN, OF COURSE

Here in the Florida Keys, we’re no strangers to underwater cleanup dives ? both why they’re needed as well as how much good they can do, especially for local reefs. This month, we were lucky to host Fabien Cousteau, grandson of famed underwater explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, on a few such dives in our waters. Learning to dive on his fourth birthday and joining Jacques on his legendary ships, the Calypso and Alcyone, it seems as if Cousteau was born to continue his grandfather’s legacy. The latter was PADI certificate 001, Cousteau recalls, describing a very different time for the oceans...

KEYS CREDIT UNION, WHICH STARTED OUT OF A CIGAR BOX 80 YEARS AGO, NOW HAS SIX OFFICES

Truly, Keys Federal Credit Union’s origin story could only have happened in the Florida Keys. The financial institution was created over 80 years ago in Key West by a group of civil service employees pooling together $110 in a cigar box. Its mission — and also its tagline “locals helping locals” — has been so successful that Keys FCU is now opening its sixth branch, in Tavernier. The location has been open since April 15 at the Tavernier Towne Center next to Winn Dixie. “We love the relationships we’re able to build with our customers,” said Desiree Perez, member services director. “They’re...

A cute, swingy red and blue patterned skirt paired with a blue halter top tank. A tea length dress in a modern batik print. MOVE OVER TOILET PAPER, NOW WE’RE RUNNING OUT OF PEPPER

Move over, toilet paper and make room for pepper. Really. Pepper. The pandemic just keeps giving … or in this case, taking away. In the spring of 2020 we collectively lost our minds about toilet paper and hand sanitizer and bought everything on the shelf. Well, the global crisis is winding down, only to pour salt in our wounds with continued shortages. And we’re not talking about employees or the gas crisis caused by hackers of the Colonial pipeline. (Seriously, that’s not a thing for Florida; our gas comes on shipping tankers. Please, stop panic-buying.)  The list is funny, but the real-world...
