MIAMI, Fla. /FLORIDA NEWSWIRE/ — The day after the American Thanksgiving Day holiday has long been considered the biggest shopping day of the year in the United States. There will be no king and queen fundraising campaign for Key West’s Fantasy Fest this year. The Royal Campaign, an annual eight-week fundraising campaign for A.H. Monroe leading up to the island’s Fantasy Fest celebration in October, has been canceled, the nonprofit’s board of directors announced Friday afternoon. “In an abundance of caution and recognizing its health services mission, the board of directors of A.H. of Monroe County, effective immediately, has canceled The Royal Campaign of Fantasy Fest 2021,” states a press release. “Our King and Queen candidates...

As of presstime, only tickets for the dinner theater matinee are available. But don’t worry, Marathon Community Theatre is bringing back the second round of mystery dinner theater in September.  The evenings of laughter, intrigue and good food are the brainchild of Charla Garrison, an MCT member, actress and author. She owned the Detective Dinner Theatre in Clearwater for 16 years. In 2018, she sold her business, and her husband sold his surf shop, and the couple relocated to the Florida Keys.  Garrison has written more than a dozen murder mystery comedy plans, and sold several to...

The SAT pressure is in full force and her beautiful, celebrity mother and handsome, successful father are cast as the helicopter parents from hell. Chloe’s grades are mediocre at best and her mom hires “the” college consultant to get the job done. Chloe is more focused on her longtime crush and spending weekends with her best friend but figures that whatever makes her parents happy and gets them off her back is fine by her. The morning the FBI comes banging on...

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of music legend and Key Wester, Paul Cotton. Paul didn’t have fans in Key West, he had an extended family. After spending a life in the music business, his only real friends were the musicians he toured and recorded with, until he arrived on his new island home in 2004. He made some great friends, starting with the members of the Paul Cotton Band, and the people he met in his daily life in this One Human Family community.  Paul loved the vibrant and diverse Key West with its unusually large music scene and many performers playing original...

Fans of Ernest Hemingway’s literary greatness and vigorous life, including scores of bearded Hemingway look-alikes, converged on Key West July 20 to 25 for Hemingway Days 2021.  The annual celebration salutes the Nobel Prize-winning author’s writing achievements, sporting pursuits and enjoyment of the island’s lifestyle.  The festival’s highlight is the Hemingway Look-Alike Contest at Sloppy Joe’s Bar, 201 Duval St., which raises money for scholarships. As soon as comedian Paula Poundstone picks up the call, there’s a crackling energy on the other end of the line. She imparts a hearty, genuine greeting before launching into a conversation about masks that quickly leads her to wonder if it might be kind for society to start an “Awkward Chin Support Group” now that we’re all feeling so exposed. It’s easy to see how this woman has been charming her fans and relating to live audiences for 40 years. (I also begin to wonder if I should be self-conscious about my chin.) Poundstone’s upcoming Aug. 21 comedy show at Key West Theater couldn’t arrive...

A half became whole this summer. Country music superstar Brian “BK” Kelley, “the Florida half” of top-selling country duo Florida Georgia Line, released his first solo album, “Sunshine State of Mind,” in which he vows to be a “Florida boy forever.” Three or four of the songs were recorded in Key West at Jimmy Buffett’s Shrimp Boat Sound studio along Key West Harbor.  Kelley and friends had a big time while “working” in Key West: fishing, writing songs, drinking, recording songs, fishing, drinking. And there are plenty of recognizable Keys references in the songs, including Hemingway, Key...
