The Upper Keys Weekly is proud to partner with Coral Shores’ faculty and staff in choosing “The Student of the Week.” Recipients are chosen on qualifications including academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude. We thank our future leaders and CSHS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Hurricane Pride,” and for giving us a glimpse into their world.

Marathon High School seniors Owen Pitchford and Katerina Nikiforova were named to the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Dairy Farmers Academic All-State Team for the 2020/21 school year.
The FHSAA considers this its most prestigious end-of-the-year award for student athletes. Twenty-four student athletes around the state are named to the team each year. “Grease” was a play before it was a blockbuster movie. In fact, at the time that it closed its run on Broadway in 1980, it had racked up more than 3,000 performances since its start in 1971. The play has different songs, and the school version of the play is very G-rated when compared to the original production.
Marathon High School’s drama club will perform “Grease” this weekend — Friday and Saturday, April 9-10 with a 7 p.m. curtain, and on Sunday, April 11 with a 2 p.m. curtain.
“It took me a while to appreciate the differences between the movie and the play,” said director Carrollyn Cox,...
Monroe County officials are mulling a special summer school session that would be open to all students as a way to regroup after a historic and challenging pandemic year. The details should be finalized by the end of April.

“Typically, summer school is geared toward recovery and remediation,” said Amber Archer Acevedo, coordinator of community...

For the Keys Weekly photo opp, she wore mirrored aviator sunglasses while flight instructor Sol Bradman handed her a check and gave a thumbs-up, in true Top Gun style.
All we needed was Maverick and Ice Man in flight suits to saunter on by, and the scene would have been perfect.
But it’s perfect enough for Prince. “I feel really blessed,” Prince told Keys Weekly. “It’s really cool. Especially being one of the few women in the field.”

The Monroe County Public Library System began reopening to in-person visits on a staggered schedule starting the week of March 22, with Key West and Big Pine Key being first. Their schedule is Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“It’s been really nice to have patrons back in the building,” said Key West Branch manager Michael Nelson. “One of the patrons said, ‘It’s great to be home again’ since it’s part of their daily routine.”
